JAMES A. JOHNSTON, ESQ.

James Johnston left government service in 2021 to start his own law firm. He previously worked for a small Baltimore law firm, the Office of the Public Defender, and as chief lobbyist for the state Department of Juvenile Services. He has focused on criminal defense practice in Maryland state courts for more than 20 years.

James is the former president of the Maryland Criminal Defense Attorneys Association and regularly teaches judges, law students, and medical students. He has a special expertise in the intersection of juvenile and adult criminal law.

RACHEL FLURIACH, ESQ.

Rachel joined our firm in 2025 after finishing a clerkship for Circuit Court Judge Robert Cahill, Jr., then judge-in-charge of Baltimore County Circuit Court’s criminal docket.

Rachel grew up in Florida, where she earned her undergraduate degree at Florida State University. She graduated from the University of Baltimore School of Law in 2024 and is member of the Maryland Bar.

She is active in the young lawyers’ section of the American Bar Association, and the Maryland State Bar Association.

Rachel joined the firm in 2025.

Office Assistant

MELISSA B.

Melissa is the firm’s office assistant. She had a long career with the Office of the Public Defender and in private practice for a small, Frederick-based law firm (Puhala & English) before working as a judicial assistant for Judge English on the Circuit Court for Frederick County.

Melissa joined the firm in 2024.
